What to expect at a Japanese head spa: your questions answered
People ask the same handful of questions before their first head spa. Here are plain answers, so you arrive knowing what the hour holds.
Is it a salon shampoo?
No. A salon shampoo is quick and its job is clean hair. A Japanese head spa is slow and its job is the scalp: a careful, thorough cleanse with warm water and steam, then a long, rhythmic massage of the scalp, temples, neck and shoulders. You lie back with your eyes closed. It is not a haircut or a color service.
Will my hair get wet?
Yes. Warm water is part of the cleanse, so plan on damp hair when you sit up. A hair tie in your bag helps, and so does an evening with nowhere formal to be. Tell the front desk about recent color, a perm or a sensitive scalp when you book, and we will talk it through.
How long, how much, how often?
The Japanese Head Spa at Desert Zen is one session of 60 minutes: 60 minutes $89. There is no rule on how often. Some guests come every month, some save it for a birthday, and some book it as a gift. You can also add a second service in the same visit, such as a 30 minute focused massage on the neck and shoulders.
What to wear and bring
- Comfortable clothes you do not mind a little steam near.
- A hair tie or clip for afterward.
- Nothing else. You do not need to wash your hair first.
Many guests feel relaxed afterward and say their scalp feels clean and refreshed. For a step by step description of the hour, read the first-timer's guide, or see the Japanese Head Spa page for details and booking.
Massage at Desert Zen is for comfort and relaxation. It is not medical advice and is not a substitute for care from your doctor. Please check with your doctor first if you have a medical condition, and tell your therapist about it before the session.
