Massage for bursitis comfort

A careful approach

Bursitis is an inflamed cushion near a joint, and it is something to have your doctor look at. A massage therapist does not treat it. We do not massage directly on a tender, inflamed bursa. Instead, we may work on the muscles around the area that tighten up to protect it: the hips and glutes, the upper back and neck, or the forearm.

What we do and do not do

  • We do: slow, light to medium work around the sore area, and warm up the muscles that feel tight.
  • We do not: press on the painful spot, use deep or aggressive pressure there, or promise any result.
  • We ask where it hurts, since when it started and whether your doctor has given you instructions.

Ask your doctor first

If your bursitis is new or flared up, check with your doctor before booking. When it has calmed down and you have the OK, a gentle 30 or 60 minute session can be a comfortable way to ease tension around it.
