Massage for shoulder stiffness and frozen shoulder
When reaching for a shelf or a seat belt hurts, the muscles around the shoulder tend to guard and tighten. Massage may help them relax and may help comfort and range of movement.
What we focus on
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsular stiffness) is a condition your doctor diagnoses and manages. Massage is not a treatment for it. What massage can do is help the neck, upper back, chest and arm muscles that surround a stiff shoulder feel less tense, so you feel more comfortable and may move a little more freely.
How a session goes
- We start with slow, warm work on the neck, upper back and shoulder blade.
- Pressure stays in your comfort zone. If it hurts, we back off.
- We do not force the shoulder through its range. Any movement stays gentle and within your limits.
- Side-lying positions with pillow support are common.
A 30-minute focused massage on the neck and shoulder is a good starting point; many guests move up to 60 minutes.
Work with your care team
If you are seeing a physical therapist, ask whether massage fits alongside your exercises, and tell us what they have suggested. We are happy to follow their guidance.

Questions
Does massage fix a frozen shoulder?
No. A frozen shoulder is managed by your doctor or physical therapist. Massage may help the surrounding muscles relax and add to your comfort.
Will the massage hurt?
It should not. Tell your therapist right away if anything is too intense.
