Massage after knee or hip replacement
Once your surgeon says it is fine, gentle massage may help you feel more relaxed and comfortable as you rebuild strength and mobility.
First, your doctor's OK
Please get clearance from your surgeon or doctor before booking any massage after a joint replacement, and bring any instructions with you. When you book, tell the front desk the date of your surgery, and tell your therapist at the start of your session. We will follow your doctor's limits, including areas to avoid.
What a gentle session looks like
- Shorter sessions, often 30 minutes, with light pressure to begin.
- Careful work on the muscles around the hips, lower back, thighs and calves, avoiding the incision area while it is healing.
- Comfortable positioning with pillows and bolsters, or seated options where lying on one side is hard.
- A slow pace and plenty of time to get on and off the table.
Where it fits in recovery
Massage does not replace physical therapy or exercises. Many people find that relaxing tight muscles in between appointments makes them feel better and more comfortable. If you are recovering near SaddleBrooke, Oro Valley or Catalina, we are a short drive away, and the plaza has parking right in front.
Gentle lymphatic drainage massage is another option, again only with your doctor's OK.

Only when your surgeon or doctor says it is fine. Timing differs for each person, so ask your care team first.
Do you massage the surgical area?
Not while it is healing. We work on other muscles and follow your doctor's instructions.
