Couples massage etiquette: what to expect and what to say
A first couples massage raises small questions. Do we talk? Where do we change? Here are the answers, so the only thing left to do is relax.
Before you arrive
- Arrive a few minutes early so both of you can settle in. A late arrival can shorten the session.
- Silence your phones and leave them in a bag.
- If it is a birthday or an anniversary, tell the front desk when you book.
- Each of you picks your own treatment. One can choose a gentle relaxing massage and the other deep tissue.
In the suite
The couples suite has two tables side by side, with a therapist for each of you. The therapists step out while you get on the table. Undress only to your comfort level; you stay draped throughout, and only the area being worked on is uncovered. Say so at once if pressure or temperature is not right. Your therapist wants to hear it.
Talking is optional. Many couples stay quiet, some whisper a little at the start. Either is fine. Massage here is professional and therapeutic, and the room is for rest.
Afterward
Take your time sitting up. Drink some water, dress at your own pace and let the front desk know if you would like to book again. Gratuity is a personal choice; if you are unsure how it works, ask at the front desk.
It is not only for romance
The suite works for any two guests: partners, friends, a parent and an adult child. Two people booked together start at the same moment, and the booking box holds both therapists and the suite for you. See the couples massage page for lengths and prices: 60 minutes $179, 90 minutes $259, 120 minutes $339.
Massage at Desert Zen is for comfort and relaxation. It is not medical advice and is not a substitute for care from your doctor. Please check with your doctor first if you have a medical condition, and tell your therapist about it before the session.
