Why a careful therapist works around the sore spot
If a hip, shoulder or elbow is tender to touch, the kindest massage may not touch that spot at all. Here is why, and what we do instead.
A tender spot is a signal
When a joint area is irritated, the muscles around it often tighten to protect it. That tightness can spread: a sore hip can bring a tight lower back, and a sore shoulder can bring a tight neck. Your doctor can tell you what is causing the tenderness. A massage therapist does not diagnose it.
What we do instead
- Work on the muscles around the area with light to medium pressure.
- Keep well clear of the tender point itself, and never use deep pressure there.
- Check in often. Tell us immediately if anything feels sharp or too intense.
- Use pillows and positioning so the sore area is supported and not squeezed.
When to wait
If the area is hot, swollen, newly painful or you cannot tell why it hurts, see your doctor before booking a massage. When things have settled and you have the OK, a gentle session may help you feel more comfortable. Our bursitis comfort page explains more.
Massage at Desert Zen is for comfort and relaxation. It is not medical advice and is not a substitute for care from your doctor. Please check with your doctor first if you have a medical condition, and tell your therapist about it before the session.
