Desk neck and driving back: small habits, more comfort

Oracle Road commutes, long drives to Phoenix and hours at a screen all end up in the same places: the neck, the shoulders and the lower back.

Small habits that may help

  • Break up sitting. Stand and walk for a minute every half hour or so.
  • Set up your seat. Support your lower back and keep the screen at eye level or the wheel within easy reach.
  • Drop your shoulders. Notice when they creep up toward your ears and let them fall.
  • Drink water through the day, and especially after a massage.

What a massage may add

A massage does not replace better habits, but it may help tight muscles relax and give you a clear sense of where you hold tension. A 30-minute focused massage on the neck, shoulders and back is a good place to begin. Some guests add a Japanese Head Spa when the tension seems to live in the head and neck.

When to see your doctor

Numbness, tingling, weakness or pain that does not go away are reasons to speak to your doctor rather than book a massage. Our back and neck tension page has more on what we offer.

Massage at Desert Zen is for comfort and relaxation. It is not medical advice and is not a substitute for care from your doctor. Please check with your doctor first if you have a medical condition, and tell your therapist about it before the session.
