How often should someone with arthritis get a massage?
There is no single right answer, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. Here is a practical way to find a rhythm that works for you.
Start with one session and watch
Book one gentle session, 30 to 60 minutes, and pay attention to how you feel that evening, the next morning and two days later. That tells you more than any rule. Some people feel easier for a day or two, some for longer, and some find the real benefit is simply an hour of calm.
Rhythms people use
- Every two to four weeks is a common starting point for people who enjoy the effect and want it to be part of the month.
- Once a month suits many budgets and calendars, and still gives you something to look forward to.
- Shorter and more often works for some: a 30 minute focused session on shoulders or lower back in place of one long session.
- Before a big event or after a busy stretch, such as a trip, a family visit or a long drive.
On a rough day
If a joint is hot, swollen or newly painful, check with your doctor before you book. On a stiff but ordinary day, many people choose lighter pressure, a chair massage or a shorter session. It is fine to move an appointment when you are not feeling well.
What to tell your therapist
- Which joints are sore today, and which are worse than usual.
- How firm you like the pressure. Light to medium is a fine choice, and deep work is never required.
- Any positions that are hard, so we can use pillows or side-lying.
- What your doctor has advised.
Massage does not change arthritis. It may help you feel more comfortable and relaxed, and that is the goal here. See our page on gentle massage for arthritis stiffness.
Massage at Desert Zen is for comfort and relaxation. It is not medical advice and is not a substitute for care from your doctor. Please check with your doctor first if you have a medical condition, and tell your therapist about it before the session.
Questions
Can I have a massage during an arthritis flare-up?
Ask your doctor first. On a rough day many people reschedule, or choose very light work or a chair massage.
Do I need deep tissue massage with arthritis?
No. Many people prefer light to medium pressure near sore joints. Tell your therapist your preference and it will be followed.
