Should you take a hot shower after a massage?

Usually yes, and warm is better than hot. Here is how to decide, and what to do right after a session.

The short answer

A warm shower after a massage is fine for most people, and many find it feels good. Very hot water is another matter. After a session you are relaxed, your muscles are loose and your blood pressure may sit a little lower than usual, so a steaming shower can leave you lightheaded. Go warm, not hot, and stand up slowly when you get out.

When to wait or keep it cooler

  • After cupping. The skin can be sensitive and may show round marks. Keep the water gentle and pat dry.
  • After hot stones. Your skin is already warm. A cooler shower often feels better.
  • After oils or lotion. Some guests like to leave a little on for the evening, and some shower it off. Either is fine; it is a matter of how your skin feels.
  • If you feel dizzy. Sit down, drink water and wait before you stand in the shower.

Hot tub or sauna the same day

A hot tub or sauna on top of a massage is a lot of heat on a body that has just relaxed. Many people choose one or the other, and keep the rest of the day easy. If you have a heart condition or blood pressure concerns, ask your doctor before you combine them.

What helps more than the shower

Drink a glass of water, because you have spent an hour in a warm room, and plan a quiet evening if you can. You may hear that a massage releases toxins and that water or a shower flushes them out. We do not make that claim. Water is simply a good idea, and a slow evening lets you enjoy how you feel.
