Deep tissue vs Swedish massage: how to choose
Both are good, and they feel different. Here is a plain way to pick, and why you do not always have to.
Swedish: long and flowing
Swedish massage uses long, flowing strokes with light to medium pressure. It is the classic relaxation massage, and a good first choice if you are new to massage, short on sleep or simply need to slow down.
Deep tissue: slower and firmer
Deep tissue uses slower strokes and firmer pressure on tight areas, such as the muscles between the shoulder blades or along the lower back. It can feel intense. A good therapist works with your breathing and goes only as deep as you allow. It should never feel sharp; if it does, say so.
How to choose
- New to massage, or wanting to unwind: start with Swedish.
- One stubborn spot: ask for firmer work there and lighter work elsewhere.
- Not sure: book the Signature Full Body Massage, which blends Swedish, deep tissue and sports techniques. The therapist shapes it as you go: 60 minutes $89, 90 minutes $129, 120 minutes $169.
Two myths
No pain, no gain does not apply. Strong pressure is not better pressure, and a massage that makes you tense up is working against itself. Soreness the next day happens for some people after firm work, rather like after a new workout, and it usually fades quickly. If you have pain that does not go away, see your doctor.

Questions
Which is better for stress, deep tissue or Swedish?
Most people find Swedish better for unwinding, because the strokes are long and the pressure is gentler. Deep tissue suits tight, stubborn areas.
Will deep tissue massage leave me sore?
Some people feel tender for a day, like after a workout. Sharp pain is a sign to ask your therapist for lighter pressure right away.
